e-learning tool

In Victoria, the newborn screening program is funded by the Department of Health and is available to all babies. The screening service is operated by the Victorian Clinical Genetics Service which is based at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.

This e-learning tool has been developed for nursing/midwifery students and practising professionals. It is designed to provide an overview of the newborn screening program in Victoria. In addition to general information, it also includes sections on appropriate sample collection techniques, detail about what happens after screening and discusses the important task of informing parents about screening.

The tool has two versions; assessed and non-assessed. The assessed version requires that all sections are completed in order, during one session (if you log out, you will have to start again) and there is a quiz at the end. The non-assessed version lets you pick and choose which sections to view and also allows you to access the resources section. If you choose the assessed version, completing the tool and the quiz will take approximately 40 minutes.

HELP – for assistance, use the help link at the top of the screen

RESOURCES – contains printable copies of useful information, brochures, quiz, consent process, etc

NARRATOR – The e-tool narrator Robyn is there to talk you through the tool. You can 'pause' or 'mute' Robyn if you would prefer to progress through the tool without her assistance. This can be done using the control panel at her feet. It is not recommended you do this for section 1 however, as there is information that will be missed if you skip through.
